Now and Then Germein Art Focus Looking back on seven years or work of Germein Art Focus who have exhibited together since 2007. Harm Folkers, Neil Hann, Anna Herburt, Marek Herburt, Barbara Looby, Jan Pana, Clan Rodda and ineke Van Den Hout Artists from Port Pirie and surrounds Germein Art Focus consists of eight established artists who, having met through their association with the Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery, decided in 2007 to exhibit as a cooperative group. The founding members are; Barbara Looby, Harm Folkers, Neil Hann, Anna Herburt, Marek Herburt, Jan Pana and Clan Rodda. Ineke van den Hout joined the group in 2013. Their paintings and drawings not only draw upon their surroundings in the Upper North and Flinders Ranges, but also reflect heritage and cultural influences from Poland, Holland, Japan, Africa and the Solomon Islands. Their home gallery is Harm and Tinky Folker’s ‘Port Germein Art Gallery’ in which two major group exhibitions of new work are held each year in autumn and spring. Individuals or sub-groups use the gallery to highlight their work at other times. The gallery is also used for workshops and meetings. The artists: Barbara Looby – Port Flinders (Weeroona Island) Barbara is an award winning artist who’s figurative and abstract paintings celebrate her love of colour and drawing. Barbara has undertaken a number of art courses including at the Adelaide Central School of Art. Harm Folkers – Port Germein Harm owns the Germein Art Gallery with his partner Tinky. His prints, drawings and sumiĕ work reflect his love of the environment and of primitive designs and processes. Harm has also completed an Applied Art/Craft degree in ceramics at UniSA, Underdale. Neil Hann – Port Germein Neil was an art teacher until he resigned in 2008 to become a full-time artist. His colourful landscape drawings, acrylics and watercolours draw upon his studies of contemporary arts practice. Recent work involves complex layering and the combination of seemingly disparate modes of expression with the emphasis on linework. Anna Herburt – Snowtown Initially trained in Poland, Anna is a well known in and around Snowtown. She has developed a reputation not only for depicting festivals and group events using traditional glass painting techniques but also in painting family portraits and icons. Her latest interest is in the use of felted wool for creative garments and sculptures. Marek Herburt - Snowtown Marek was trained at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Lódź (Poland). An award-winning artist with his landscape paintings he is also well known for his exhibitions of abstract paintings and prints, recently exhibiting in Warsaw, Poland. He was represented by Greenhill Galleries in Adelaide. Jan Pana – Port Pirie. A graduate of the National Art School Sydney, Jan has been a Graphic and Exhibition Designer all her working life, in Australia and overseas, and is responsible for many of the well- known logos and symbols seen in and around Port Pirie. Recent works exploring detailed textures and contours in nature take on a more expansive landscape form and show a return to her earlier love of drawing. Clan Rodda – Port Pirie Clan is a highly respected senior member of the local arts community who studied and taught at the famous Julian Ashton School of Art in Sydney. He is renowned for his prize-winning drawings in charcoal. In 2008 the Art Gallery of New South Wales purchased two of his drawings for their permanent collection. ineke van den Hout - Port Augusta. Joined GAF in 2013 A regular overseas traveller and ‘diary artist, ineke trained in the eighties at Underdale College. Her recent works are a direct result of returning to South Australia after ten years of “exile” in the Centre of Australia. “My objective is to find movement and ephemeral qualities in nature. Whatever is happening in my life is reflected in my art works. I am in a state-of-flux, most of the time!” She is presently in Africa completing a ‘residency’ and exhibition in Namibia. |
